A path splits in two in a forest

Do you feel like you’re walking through life masking who you are to fit in?

  • Do you perform repetitive actions to self-soothe?

  • Do you have special interests that you love talking about?

  • Do you experience sensory overload due to bright lights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes?

Autism can seem like it controls your whole life. With others you are masking, trying to mirror behaviors to “feel normal” like everyone else. In public, you are easily overwhelmed in crowds, loud restaurants, and social settings.

You try to teach yourself social cues, but you still feel like you just don’t understand how to be like those around you. You’re frustrated–and you’re ready to learn how to take your autism from a burden you don’t understand to a gift that shapes you and how you see your world.

Feeling Comfortable And Confident As Your Authentic Self

Learning how to be yourself without feeling like the odd one out can be difficult. Meeting others can be especially daunting: you can come off as brusque or rude because you don’t know what to say.

You may have extreme anxiety about social situations. Additionally, you may get upset at the slightest change in plans, making social situations almost impossible to keep up with. There is not anything wrong with you. Your brain is different and whole as it is–you just need help harnessing the power of your autism into the beautiful thing that it is..

All you want is to be who you are and to feel comfortable in your skin. Our therapists, all advanced trained in neuroaffirming practices, can help you to do just that.

Exploring Autism In Adulthood Without Judgment

Autism in adulthood is becoming increasingly common, with 1 in 45 adults in the United States being on the autism spectrum. Due to how adept most adults can be at masking their symptoms, it can be a difficult diagnosis to receive. We are here to help–whether you have a formal autism diagnosis, are self-diagnosed or just beginning to explore if autism may help explain how your brain and body work. All are valid here.

Your Neurodivergence Is Valid—With Or Without A Diagnosis

Autism is unique. It exists on a spectrum of symptoms and it can feel invalidating for some adults to label themselves autistic; we are taught from a young age that only the most severe cases “count” or deserve help. At Mind Body Wellness, we strongly disagree. Neurodivergence comes in all shapes and sizes and we are here to help you on your journey, no matter where you are in your journey.

Within the autism world, there is a term called the Broader Autism Phenotype (BAP).  This refers to a set of autistic-type traits that are often found in family members of people who have autism, though anyone can have BAP. It is sometimes described as “autism lite,” as it still has a large impact on an individuals’ daily functioning but doesn’t technically qualify for a diagnosis of autism.

A few key signs that you may have BAP include perfectionism, rigidity, discomfort in social situations, and communication difficulties. This is very similar to autism, and it deserves to be discussed and honed to your gifts just like any autism diagnosis. We don’t treat you based on diagnosis–we treat you based on how your neurodivergence impacts your life, and we want to empower you to find peace.

Discovering The Joy And Strength In Being Neurodivergent

Our therapists can help you to find your spark and the joy in your neurodivergence. Being neurodivergent affirming is the bedrock of our practice–here, you are not a client we try to understand or fix, you are someone who we know the thoughts, feelings, and desires of extremely well. We are here to learn your quirks, celebrate your uniqueness, and help you to embrace who you are.

A Sensory-Friendly Space Where You Can Unmask

During therapy at Mind Body Wellness, we strive to avoid harm. We do what we can to make you feel seen and heard. Our practice is neurodivergent affirming, meaning we do our best to provide you with tools to help you flourish and feel comfortable in our office. We provide fidgets, low lighting, reduced scents, white noise, and allow you to get comfortable and use blankets if desired. We use multiple modalities to find what fits you best. We do not believe in on-size-fits-all therapy.

We offer a judgement-free zone. Allow us to help you discover who you are under the mask. We can’t wait to meet the authentic, mask-free you.

Still have questions about Neuroaffirming Autism Therapy?

What is neuroaffirming autism therapy?

Neuroaffirming autism therapy is recognizing that autism is not something that needs fixed; it is a natural variation in how people think, behave, and communicate with the world. We believe in supporting challenges, affirming strengths, and helping you build a life that is authentic to you and feels good. Mind Body Wellness 100% believes that neurodivergence is not something that needs fixed or changed. It is a gift that deserves attention and care.

What can therapy actually help with if I’m on the spectrum?

Many things!

  • Understanding and reducing autistic burnout

  • Building routines and structure where needed

  • Processing past traumas and negative experience and seeing how that shaped your neurodivergence

  • Practicing emotional regulation skills

  • Practicing communication in a stress-free environment

We will focus on what feels important to you, right now. No two experiences are alike, and we do not believe therapy should be either.

How can autistic adults benefit from therapy?

For many neurodivergent people, support was hard to come by growing up. This can lead to masking, misunderstanding, self-doubt, chronic burnout, and feeling different. Therapy can specifically help autistic people to process self-identification, get validation and understanding, process and unlearn old shame and negative beliefs, and learn ways to work, socialize, and rest in a manner that feels right for you.

What if I’ve tried therapy before and felt misunderstood?

Often, therapy is not created with a neurodivergent brain in mind. Traditional talk therapy can often feel invalidating, rushed, or can become another place where you have to mask. Mind Body Wellness is different. We respect different communication styles and adapt therapy to fit your processing style. There is no expectation to perform or explain yourself–we get it. We hope you can find the courage to check out our approach.
