Understanding ADHD Can Help You Reconnect
With Yourself
You are not alone. Although it can feel like you’re the only one struggling with these feelings, many people are diagnosed with ADHD, often as adults. Around 6.7% of adults worldwide have an ADHD diagnosis. New diagnoses in adulthood can shift personal identity and provide new emotional difficulties.
You may feel like you can’t sit still or like your mind wanders easily and quickly. You may feel like you make careless mistakes or like you talk too much. Your relationships may suffer due to misunderstandings or others not realizing that you are struggling with tasks they complete easily. You may start to feel like there is something wrong with you. At Mind Body Wellness, we disagree.
Over time, you may begin to feel like you don’t know who you are anymore; like this is your entire identity. All you want is to understand who you are and to find out how to work with your brain, not against it. With the help of counseling, you can learn just that.
ADHD Is Not A Character Flaw - It Is Part Of How Your Brain Works
Sometimes, even entertaining the thought of an ADHD diagnosis in adulthood can be hard. We learn from an early age that this is something only children have to face, but diagnosis can be hard to find.
Being chronically late to events or putting off work tasks until a boss intervenes can be embarrassing and can sometimes be labelled as “just the way you are.” With help, ADHD can be taken from something difficult to understand and hindering to what it really is: part of what makes you you, not something that needs remedied.
ADHD can cause issues in your personal and professional life. At work, distraction, disorganization, procrastination, and poor time management can strain performance and make you feel like you’re not doing well. In personal relationships, partners and friends at times do not understand why you need to interrupt when an idea comes into your head, why you’re restless and on edge, and why you forgot a planned meet up. You are not doing any of these things on purpose and they are not personality flaws. With the help of counseling, you can learn to harness these traits and turn them into strengths–this is your safe space to reach your full authentic potential.
Learning To Work With Your ADHD Brain, Not Against It
During sessions you can expect to be heard, understood, and validated. At Mind Body Wellness, we believe that ADHD is not a disorder or something that is a deficit. We believe that a more accurate term is variable attention stimulus trait (VAST). This de-medicalizes ADHD and instead focuses on the positives of having an ADHD brain. It is strengths-focused, and everyone who has VAST has many strengths. VAST symptoms appear to be contradictions: you can have amazing focus at times and then scattered attention. You can be distractable, but you’re curious. We choose to lean into that curiosity and lead with questions and intention rather than stigma or an attempt to change. Quite simply–if the box is broken, it is time to learn to color outside the lines and flourish.
You must remain open to seeing yourself as someone who does not have anything wrong with them, but as someone who simply needs direction and a deeper understanding of themselves. With the right therapist and time to grow, the results can be amazing. Expect to speak, listen, write, move, and learn along with us.

Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to start therapy?
Absolutely not. We believe that self-diagnosis is valid and real. You are the expert on you, and we are here to help guide you along your journey.
Can therapy help with self-esteem and shame related to ADHD?
Yes. Our goal is to de-stigmatize ADHD so that you see it as a part of who you are, not a hindrance. We believe neurodiversity and ADHD are gifts that simply need to be honed to be a beautiful, strong part of you.
What if I can’t stay focused during sessions?
No problem–we use a multitude of modalities to keep you engaged other than just talk therapy. We offer fidgets, art and doodling, movement–including walk and talk sessions, and are open to what you think may be helpful for you for focus and to feel supported during the sessions.
