Finding Support and Healing From Wherever You Are
As a mental health provider, I often spend time reflecting on how to preserve my own mental health so that I have what it takes to be a healing presence for my clients. Whether sessions happen in person or through online therapy, mental health care remains essential. In seasons of stress, uncertainty, and emotional overload, I believe we have an opportunity to become more intentional about how we care for ourselves and how we show up for others.
Simple Ways I Practice Self-Care
I believe that in order to be a healer and be a supportive presence, first and foremost we have to take care of ourselves. Here are a few of the ways that I am currently practicing the art of self-care:
Maintaining structure and routine to the best of my ability. Anyone who knows me knows I am also open to being flexible when needed, including in my day-to-day routines.
Making sure I get outside every day, whether it is to sit on the porch and listen to the birds sing, walk the dog, or play in the garden.
Eating as healthy as possible given my budget and what is in the house.
Limiting my screen time. If I am completely honest, this is always a work in progress. Some days I am great at limiting my screen time and others, well — like I said, I am a work in progress.
Curling up with a good book.
Taking a warm Epsom salt bath.
Practicing meditation (I use a free app called Insight Timer), especially before bed to help calm my nervous system and create space to rest.
Staying Connected In Meaningful Ways
Even in busy, stressful, or isolating seasons, there is still so much value in finding meaningful ways to connect more deeply with ourselves, our friends and family, and our community. Here are a few of the ideas that I have had:
Make an old-fashioned phone call.
Make a high-tech phone call using FaceTime, Skype, or another platform.
Check in on friends, family, and neighbors. Offer support when you can.
Write a letter. I’m talking paper, pencil, envelope, and stamp here.
And lastly, I hope each of us can take opportunities like these to reflect and practice gratitude. Gratitude for what we do have, gratitude for the ways we are growing, and gratitude for the ways we can continue becoming more grounded, compassionate people in the midst of life’s challenges.
When life feels heavy, support can make all the difference. Online therapy offers a flexible, accessible way to receive care from the comfort of your own space, while still building the connection, insight, and support needed for healing.
With love and gratitude,
Shannon
